Rhys Becks
CEO & Artistic Director
Rhys Becks is a multi-hyphenate theatre practitioner whose career has spanned acting, writing, directing, and producing across both stage and digital platforms. As the founder, CEO, and Artistic Director of Hummingbird Theatre Company (HTC), Rhys has led the company with vision and versatility since its relaunch in 2022 — mounting acclaimed productions including Those Cabaret Days!, The Soul Sisters’ Revue, and Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads.
Rhys’ passion for the performing arts began early, with his first acting role at age seven. By fourteen, he was writing, directing, and producing his own original works under the name Hummingbird Media, staging pieces that ranged from playful cabarets to dramatic classics like Ibsen’s Ghosts. After a brief hiatus for academic pursuits, Rhys made a professional return to the stage in 2021 and has since been an active creative force in the Brisbane theatre scene.
He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drama) (Distinction) and a Bachelor of Educational Studies (teaching Secondary Drama and English) from QUT. A trained performer with a Grade 8 Performance of Text (Distinction) from Trinity College London, Rhys also possesses a strong belting baritone voice, skills in text analysis, stagecraft, and production design.
Known for his collaborative leadership and eye for detail, Rhys has not only shaped HTC’s artistic output but also managed its full operational scope — from casting, contracts, and marketing, to set construction, technical design, and stakeholder engagement. His work has been attributed with accolades for both creative innovation and audience engagement.
