A Journey Through Time
Hummingbird Theatre Company (HTC) was founded in 2015 by Rhys Becks, making its debut with its first live production, A Jazz Cabaret!. Following a brief hiatus, HTC relaunched with renewed energy and focus in Brisbane in 2022, quickly captivating audiences with unforgettable productions such as Those Cabaret Days!, The Soul Sisters’ Revue, and the masterfully performed Alan Bennett's Talking Heads. At HTC, we are dedicated to blending traditional performance values with fresh, innovative ideas, striving to become a cherished and permanent fixture in Brisbane's dynamic and ever-evolving arts scene.
Who We Delight
We create theatre for those who seek more than just a night out — for people who value craft, connection, and a touch of elegance.
Our audiences include lovers of refined storytelling, live music enthusiasts, and those drawn to the charm, wit, and boldness of the burlesque cabaret. Some come for the nostalgia, others for something new and unexpected — but all come for the experience.
Beyond the stage, our workshops attract curious creatives, emerging performers, and those eager to explore their voice in a supportive, inspiring environment. Online, our digital initiatives — from filmed monologues to poetry features — connect with those who love the arts from afar or enjoy discovering new talent at their own pace.
If you are passionate about live performance, thoughtful storytelling, and want to be moved by something real, you’re in the right place.
If HTC Were a Person. . .
They’d carry themselves with quiet confidence — sophisticated, sincere, and always dependable. The kind of presence that doesn’t shout to be seen, but leaves a lasting impression.
They’d have a deep love for tradition, but an imaginative spirit — just as comfortable hosting a glittering cabaret as presenting a poignant monologue. You could count on them for quality, honesty, and thoughtful detail in everything they do.
Collaborative, nurturing, and respectful, they’d make space for others to shine. And above all, they’d care — about the craft, the people, and the stories that bring us all together.
What Makes Us Special?
We take our time. Every show, every detail, every gesture is crafted with care — not just to impress, but to connect.
At Hummingbird Theatre Company, it’s not about spectacle for spectacle’s sake. It’s about elegance, honesty, and the kind of magic that lingers. We honour tradition without being stuck in it, and we welcome innovation without losing our soul.
Whether we are on stage, online, or in the rehearsal room, we create a space for artists to grow, for audiences to connect, and for stories — both old and new — to be told with sincerity, style, and purpose.
Our Guiding Principles
We believe in Simplicity, Sincerity, Elegance & Sophistication, Empathy, Dignity & Integrity, Apolitical Positioning, and Meticulousness. These values guide our creative work, our operations, and our interactions with artists, audiences, and the community.
